Six generations ago, our family were gem traders and goldsmiths in an Aramaic parish town called Urfa (Edessa). Renowned for its monasteries and spices, Urfa was also home to a rich guild tradition where our family first learned the art of jewelry making. Two great-great uncles also routinely traveled by train to Baghdad and Aleppo in the late 1800s, to trade in diamonds and gemstones.
