Diamond Facet Alignment:
What Most Jewelers Don’t Know
To become a graduate gemologist only requires 6 months of coursework. But it takes many years for a diamond cutter, let alone a gemologist, to acquire the eye for discerning if a diamond has the proper facet alignment to hold its brilliancy.
Diamond grading reports, to be objective, only consider proportion and symmetry when grading cut. While these are important, it is ultimately the facet alignment that really determines not only the scintillation and sparkle of the diamond, but how much brilliancy will hold. Diamonds are magnetic to oils and grease and will accumulate film of soap and dirt and get dulled.
